Hawkeye : The Roxy
The Roxy was a-buzzing recently with an impressive line-up of up and coming artists. Collectively, L.A.'s own Hawkeye, New Yorkers Chocolate Genius, and Dave Matthews' latest signing, Chris Whitley, (from new label ATO Records) played for a curious crowd of Hollywood onlookers. Openers Hawkeye (formerly Kalai King) pleasantly capture the inviting feel of southern rock, with singer/guitarist Kalai following the style of Springsteen, armed with guitar, strong vocals, and a charismatic presence.
Kalai leads his band, but by no means owns the band's sound, in what seems is a group sharing of music and words. Sidekick vocalist Dawn has a lovely, understated voice, similar to the likes of Jewel. Kalai and Dawn work well together, and this was most evident in a beautiful rendition of "Thunder Road." Original tune "The Sight of Me" was an immediate favorite with its stunning harmonies, and subtle and slow-building instrumentation; it illustrated the band's cohesive sound well.
The band's members encompass many areas of the country, and use that regional sensibility and their personable on-stage qualities all rolled up to present infectious, hospitable, good-natured music. There is nothing produced or manufactured about their overall style, and in a town chalk-full of music trimmed, packaged and delivered made-to-order with not much spontaneity or sincerity, Hawkeye's southern folk rock is a welcoming addition to the L.A. music scene.
